Metal buildings and carports, set on a slab we pour

We partner with a metal building company and can recommend the right building for your project, from a carport, garage or workshop to a barn, a barndominium shell or an RV cover, and we pour the concrete pad it sits on. Call us or request more information, and we'll help you figure out what fits.

Metal buildings we can recommend through our partner

We partner with a metal building company and can recommend a building for what you need: open carports, fully enclosed garages and workshops, barns, barndominium shells and RV covers. Each one ships as a steel kit sized and laid out to what you choose.

We don't make or sell the buildings ourselves. We point you to the right one through our partner, working with the sizes, styles and options its building lines offer rather than a fully custom design, and we pour the concrete pad it sits on.

A carport is the simplest version, often just a roof on posts. A fully enclosed workshop or barn adds walls, doors and windows, and a barndominium shell is a step toward eventual living space.

How getting a metal building through our partner works

The starting point is what you need the building for: parking, a workshop, storage, a barn, or living space down the road. From there it's a matter of talking through roughly what size fits the space you've got and where on the property it'll sit.

Both of those details, size and placement, affect the building itself and the pad underneath it. Knowing them early makes the rest of the process move faster.

Call us or request more information with those details, and we'll recommend a building and walk you through what the pad needs before anything's ordered.

What size carport or metal building do you need?

Size comes down to what's going in or under it, not a number picked in the abstract. A single vehicle needs a lot less room than a carport meant to cover a boat and a trailer both.

A carport over a single driveway is a different size question than one meant to cover an RV or a boat and trailer together. Matching the size to the actual vehicle or equipment avoids paying for space you won't use, or being boxed in later.

A workshop needs space to move around whatever equipment or benches you're planning for, on top of the equipment itself. It adds up faster than most people expect on the first pass.

Think through what you want to fit now, and whether you want room to grow into later, before landing on a size.

Permits, setbacks and anchor bolts

Most areas require a permit for a metal building over a certain size, but some require one regardless of size. Setbacks from the property line are another thing to check alongside the permit question, and a homeowners' association, where one applies, may add its own rules on top of the local ones.

Anchoring ties the building down to the concrete pad with bolts set to the manufacturer's engineered drawings. That's part of what makes the pad's layout so important to get right before the building shows up.

Metal buildings compared with a pole barn, and the pad either one needs

A metal building and a pole barn solve a similar problem in different ways. Our pole barn vs. metal building guide compares how each one is framed and what each typically needs underneath it.

If you already know you want a metal building, our metal building kits guide covers common sizes and layouts, and our carport kits guide does the same for a carport specifically.

Whichever one you're picturing, our metal building foundations page covers the concrete side of that job on its own.

Questions about metal buildings

Do metal buildings need a permit?

Usually, yes, especially over a certain size, though the exact rule depends on the city or county. It's worth checking with the local building office before you order, since permit requirements vary a lot from one area to the next.

What can a metal building be used for?

A metal building can cover a lot of ground: vehicle storage, a workshop, a barn, extra storage space, or a barndominium shell meant to become living space. What you need it for is usually the first thing to settle, since it shapes the size and layout that make sense.

Can a metal building go on an existing slab?

Sometimes, if the slab is the right size, thick enough and in good condition, with anchors that match where the building's drawings call for them. An existing slab that's cracked, undersized or doesn't line up with the building's anchor layout usually needs to be replaced instead.
